Stars Edged By Southwestern In Double OT

Box Score The Dominican University men's basketball team was outscored 15-5 in the second overtime as the Southwestern University Pirates outlasted the Stars 86-76 in double-overtime in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday afternoon.

Travis Kurtz's three on the Pirates' first possession started an 8-2 run for Southwestern to open the game, but Dominican answered back with an 8-2 run of its own to knot the score at 10-10 midway through the first half. The Pirates would outscore Dominican 19-12 over the next ten minutes, taking a seven point lead into the locker room, 29-22.

As the second half got underway, Southwestern continued to play well and extended their lead to 11, 41-30, five minutes into the frame on another Kurtz three pointer. The Stars refused to go down without a fight and managed to chip away at the Pirates' lead and tie the game for a third time, 54-54, with 3:43 to go in regulation.

Just two and a half minutes later the Pirates had built their lead back to seven, 63-56, only to have it erased in one minute as Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) made a layup with ten seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 63. Chase Kocher's layup attempt with six seconds remaining rimmed out to send the first overtime.

Scoring the final seven points of regulation, Dominican had momentum on their side as overtime got underway, but the lead pinballed back and forth with five lead changes in five minutes of play. A pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining by Southwestern's Michael Cantu tied the game 71-71 to send the game into a second overtime frame.

The Stars led early in the second overtime on a three pointer in their first possession by Anthony Keener (Carol Stream, Ill.). However, the Pirates took control after Keener fouled out with 3:58 to play, closing the game with eight unanswered points to arrive at the 86-76 final.

Dominican was paced by Logan Harris's (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) game-high 28 points. The Stars' 6'4 forward was an efficient 9-for-12 from the field including knocking down a career-high six three-pointers, playing the entire 50 minutes. Keener added 22 for the Stars in the losing effort.

The loss drops the Stars to 3-8 on the season. Dominican will remain in San Antonio, taking on the Trinity University Tigers on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
