Stars Close Season On Winning Note

Box Score The Dominican University men's basketball team closed out the 2011-2012 season on Saturday afternoon, topping the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders 65-64 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Challenge Game.

Trailing 50-41 with 12:04 to play, the Stars called a timeout, changing the game plan to a high-pressure defense that changed the game.  Kyle Sherwin (White Lake, Mich.) got a steal on the Crusaders next possession and fed Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) for a dunk.  The Crusaders then missed the front-end of a one-and-one before the Stars' DeAnthony Moore (Chicago, Ill.) knocked down a three.  After another Crusader turnover, Moore scored on a layup to draw the Stars within 50-48 and cap a 7-0 run that spanned just 1:23.

Dominican eventually evened the score at 54-54, 56-56 and 59-59 before eventually overtaking the Crusaders 62-59 on a three-point jumper by Sherwin with 5:28 remaining.  Dominican then held on the rest of the way for their third win in their last four games.

The Stars finish the season at 6-19, going 3-13 in NAC play.  Darrius Nelson (Michigan City, Ind.) paced the Stars with 11 points and finishes his collegiate career with 1,104 points.  The Stars' senior guard was 5-for-12 from the field in the winning effort.  DeRoo and Sherwin added ten points apiece while Moore scored a career-high eight points in the final game of his career.
