The Dominican University women’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, knocking off both the Marian University Sabres and the Lakeland College Muskies by 6-3 scores.
In the morning victory over the Sabres, Dominican took a 2-1 lead after doubles as
Marbeya Berner (New Lenox, Ill.) and
Rosemary Orchanian (Portage, Mich.) rallied from a 5-2 deficit at number two doubles to take the flight, 8-6. The Stars’ number three doubles team of
Emily Hereford (St. Louis, Mo.) and
Stephanie Castaneda (Mendota, Ill.) picked up the other point for the Stars in doubles play, topping their Sabre opponents 8-3.
Rachel Taddy (Cary, Ill.) rallied from a 6-1 loss in her first set at number one singles, winning the second and third sets 6-4, 7-5 while Berner,
Monica Budzak (Chicago, Ill.) and Orchanian scored victories at four, five and six singles respectively.
In the afternoon match against the Muskies, the Stars again held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. The Stars’ number two and three doubles teams of Berner and Orchanian and Hereford and Castaneda scored victories.
In singles action, Taddy squeaked out another three-set victory, topping Lakeland’s April Schmitz 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 while Hereford picked up her first singles victory of the season, 6-1, 7-5 over Lakeland’s Jenna Oberthaler. Berner and Orchanian picked up the Stars’ final two points of the match to seal the victory.
The pair of victories pushes the Stars to 3-3 on the season and 3-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference. Dominican returns to action on Sunday, hosting the NAC-leading Edgewood College Eagles for an 11:00 a.m. match at Taylor Park.
