Stars Earn Shutout Win Over #8 Wheaton

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over the Wheaton College Thunder on Tuesday afternoon in River Forest.  The win lifts the Stars to 4-1-1 on the season while dropping the Thunder, ranked eighth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Top 25 Poll, to 5-2-0.

Leo Elizalde (Wheeling, Ill.) gave the Stars a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, netting his first goal of the season.  David Aranda (Wheeling, Ill.) picked up an assist on the play, his first of the season, as he split a pair Thunder defenders out of the left corner before finding Elizalde just inside the top of the 18-yard box.

The score remained 1-0 in the Stars' favor throughout the remainder of the first half, with both teams logging four shots in the first 45 minutes.

The Thunder pressed in the second half, ripping nine shots and putting four on frame, but Dominican's defense held strong and Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) showed tremendous poise as he added an insurance goal for the Stars in the 74th minute.  Ybarra slipped behind the Thunder defense and gathered his own rebound after Wheaton's Ryan Seager made the initial save, but then as Seager dove to try to collect the rebound, Ybarra flicked the ball over Seagar to pass to himself and found the back of the goal.

Max Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) picked up the shutout in goal for the Stars, facing 13 shots and making four saves.  It was the second straight shutout for the Stars and Gutbrod, who beat Edgewood 4-0 on Saturday.

Dominican returns to the pitch on Saturday, hosting the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders for a 1:00 p.m. Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) match.
