Stars Knock Off Calvin

Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team opened back-to-back games in Michigan on Friday night with a 2-1 win over the Calvin College Knights in a match up of two top 25 teams in the country.

Sophomore Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) got the Stars on the board in the 21st minute, with his first goal of the season, as he bent a free kick from 25-yards out around the Calvin defensive wall, beating the Knights’ goalkeeper just inside the near post.

Senior goalkeeper Max Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.), making his first appearance since 2010, kept the Stars in the lead late in the first half, turning away Joe Broekhuizen’s free kick, one of two saves for Gutbrod in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Stars took advantage of a costly Calvin mistake, as the Stars were awarded a penalty kick after Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) was taken down in the box.  Senior Andy Lynch (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) made the most of the opportunity, ripping the penalty kick to the right corner to extend the Stars’ lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute.

Calvin managed a late goal with under seven minutes to play as Ben Honeycutt notched his second goal of the season, but the Stars’ stingy defense allowed just one shot the rest of the way.

The Stars were outshot for the third time in as many games, with Calvin holding a 14-6 advantage in shots, but the Stars’ defense allowed just five shots on goal, with Gutbrod logging four saves.

The win pushes the Stars to 2-0-1 on the season.  They will return to action tomorrow night, traveling to Holland, Mich., to take on the Hope College Flying Dutchmen in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division III National Tournament second round.  Kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM ET at Hope’s Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
