Stars Roll In River Forest Rivalry Matchup

Box Score The Dominican University men’s basketball team led from wire-to-wire in the Stars’ River Forest rivalry matchup against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Wednesday night, cruising to an 83-49 win in the Stars’ Igini Sports Forum.

Kevin Tiongson (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) got two looks from three-point distance on the Stars’ opening possession, burying the second attempt to put the Stars on top and spark a 7-0 run to open the game and Dominican never looked back.

Dominican had built up an 11-point lead, 20-9, after a pair of free throws by Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) with 10:30 remaining in the opening half but the Cougars scored 10 of the next 13 points to narrow the gap to 23-19 on a Spenser Demith jumper with 3:40 to play in the first.  The Stars responded with a 9-0 run to close out the half, including a 70-foot buzzer beater by Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) to put Dominican ahead 32-19 at the break.

The Stars opened the second half with a 12-6 run to open a 19-point lead on another Tiongson three-pointer with over 15:30 to play.

The Cougars never really threatened the rest of the night with Dominican leading by as many as 38 in the final minute.

DeRoo paced four players in double-figures scoring for the Stars, dropping in 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field.  Harris and freshman Ryan Risley (Oak Lawn, Ill.) added 17 apiece while Tiongson finished with ten.  Harris also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Brandon Stinson scored a team-high 16, including 14 in the second half, in the losing effort for Concordia Chicago, who shot just 32-percent from the field (20-61) and 16-percent from three (3-18).

Dominican had its second-best shooting night of the season, knocking down 56 percent from the field (31-55) and was a season best 8-for-16 from three-point range.

The win improves Dominican to 5-10 on the season and 3-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) while dropping the Cougars to 1-12 overall and 1-6 in conference play.  The Stars return to the hardwood on Saturday, hosting the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders for a 4:15 p.m. tipoff in the Igini Sports Forum.
