Stars Cruise To Second Straight Win

Box Score The Dominican University men’s basketball team picked up its second straight win, rolling over the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders 87-66 on Saturday afternoon in River Forest.

Anthony Keener (Carol Stream, Ill.) scored a game-high 24 points, 16 in the second half, on 9-for-12 shooting from the field.  It was the sixth time the Stars’ sophomore went for at least 20 and the tenth time in 16 games that he paced the Stars’ offense.  During a 19-4 run early in the second half as Dominican put the game out of reach, Keener scored nine, including seven straight that opened up a 68-47 lead for the Stars with 12:31 to play.

Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.), featured on a NorthWest Cable News for a 71-foot buzzer beater earlier in the week, chipped in a career-high 20 points in the winning effort for the Stars.  DeRoo, a 6’2 guard, was 9-for-15 from the field, going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, and added a team-high four assists.  Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) and Ryan Risley (Oak Lawn, Ill.) dropped in ten apiece, the second time in as many games Risley has added double-figures off the bench while Harris added a game-high 17 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

While Dominican led for nearly 36 of the 40 minutes, Brett Cashner and Matthew McGivern did their best to keep the Crusaders in the game.  Cashner scored a season-high 22 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, appearing in just second game after missing eight straight.  McGivern added 13 in the losing effort, shooting 5-for-8 from the field but going just 11-for-23 from the foul line.

As a team, the Crusaders, shooting just 60.9-percent from the free throw line on the season, were just 11-for-23 while Dominican converted on 15 of their 19 attempts from the charity stripe.

The Stars, now 6-10 on the season and 4-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC), will look to keep their momentum going on Tuesday night when they travel to Rockford College to take on the Regents and look to avenge a 72-70 loss at the hands of the Regents back on November 27 to open conference play.
