Late Run Pushes Stars Past Greenville

Box Score The Dominican University men’s basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak, using a 20-8 run over the final 5:14 to top the visiting Greenville College Panthers 85-74 on Wednesday afternoon.  Anthony Keener (Carol Stream, Ill.) scored 16 of his game-high 33 during the Stars’ run after returning to the Stars’ lineup with 5:54 to play with four fouls.
 
Dominican built up a 16-point lead at the break, 49-33, shooting over 66-percent from the field in the opening period.  Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) and Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) combined for 19 in the first half, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the field.  Deroo scored 10 of his 12 points on the afternoon in the first half while Harris added nine points in the opening frame before finishing the afternoon with 11.
 
Trailing 5-4 after an Alex Mumphard three for the Panthers, Keener drove the lane to spark a 14-0 run for the Stars over the next three minutes and put Dominican in control for the remainder of the first half.  Kevin Tiongson (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) capped the Stars’ run with the first of his three triples in the game.
 
The Panthers started to chip away at the Dominican lead, outscoring the Stars 33-16 over the first 13:38 of the second half before Keener took over to seal the victory for Dominican.
 
Dominican, paced by Keener’s season-high 33, had five players reach double-figures scoring with Tiongson chipping in 13 and Kyle Sherwin (White Lake, Mich.) adding ten off the Stars’ bench.
 
As a team, Dominican shot 32-for-56 from the field, going 6-for-14 from three, and 15-for-21 from the foul line.
 
The Panthers were led by MarQuel Jones’s 17 points.
 
Dominican, now 4-9 on the season, returns to the hardcourt on Saturday, traveling to Sheboygan, Wis., to take on the Lakeland College Muskies in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
