Box Score Taylor DeRoo's (Holland, Mich.) steal and slam with 5:53 remaining in the game capped a 13-1 run and put the Dominican University men's basketball team on top 65-58 before the Stars held on for a 69-68 win over the visiting the Benedictine University Eagles on Wednesday night. The win was the Stars' fifth straight and improves the team to 9-10 overall and 7-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).
Dominican trailed by as many as 12 in the first half as the Stars shot just 32-percent from the field (10-for-32) while the Eagles went 7-for-15 from three-point range in the opening stanza to carry a 37-28 lead at the break.
The Stars' offense heated up in the second half, opening the frame on. 19-9 run over the first 7:26 capped by
James Stawarz's ( Crystal Lake, Ill.) lone field goal on the night to give the Stars a brief 47-46 lead.
The Eagles responded, scoring the next six before
Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) stopped the run with a three-point play.
Then with the Eagles lead at five, 57-52, DeRoo began the sprint to the finish, scoring 13 of his career-high 29 points over the next three minutes.
The Stars then sealed the win on the defensive end of the floor, including a huge steal by
Michal Bobek (Orland Hills, Ill.) with 33 seconds remaining.
DeRoo's 29 points led all scorers. The 6'2 guard shot 12-for-19 from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line. Harris added 16 points and grabbed ten rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season while
Kevin Tiongson (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) dropped in 11 points in the winning effort.
Tim McGinty scored a team-high 15 points for the Eagles in the loss.
Dominican, sitting in second in the NAC South Division, returns to action on Saturday, playing host to the Edgewood College Eagles for a 4:15 p.m. tipoff.
