Win Streak Halted As Stars Tripped Up By Edgewood

Box Score The Dominican University men’s basketball team saw its season-best five-game win streak snapped on Saturday evening as the visiting Edgewood College Eagles outlasted the Stars 75-63 in River Forest.  The loss drops the Stars to 9-11 overall and 7-5 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC), leaving Dominican a game-and-a-half ahead of Wisconsin Lutheran and Rockford College for second in the NAC South Division.

The Stars trailed by just one at the break, 31-30 after Edgewood’s Joe Klocek layup put the visiting Eagles on top with six seconds remaining in the opening period.  Edgewood then opened the second stanza with a 14-4 run over the first 3:44 of the half to open an 11-point advantage, 45-34, on another Klocek lay in, this time with 14:20 to play.

Edgewood continued to extend the lead, taking a 62-47 advantage as Justin Williams dropped in two of his game-high 18 points with under nine minutes remaining before Dominican made a run of its own as Kevin Tiongson (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) scored eight of his team-high 17 points on a 12-2 run to pull Dominican within 64-59 with under five minutes to play.

Williams 18 points, led a 41-point effort by the Edgewood College bench while Klocek dropped in 14 and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.

Tiongson’s 17 was a season-high for the Stars’ junior guard as he was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.  Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) dropped in 16 for Dominican while Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) added 12 in the losing effort.

The Stars return to the hardwood on Tuesday evening, traveling to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on the WLC Warriors.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Warriors’ REX Complex.
