Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team solidified a first round bye in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament with a 4-0 win over the visiting Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Dominican improved to 9-4-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the NACC.
Marco Alvarez (Aurora, Ill.) jumpstarted the Stars' offense in the tenth minute of play as he received a pass from
Eli Sherman (Columbia, Mo.) before sliding a shot in off the far post from 25-yards out and past a diving Roberto Aragon.
Seven minutes later, Dominican's
Carmelo Abate (Bartlett, Ill.) collected a Concordia clearance attempt and beat one man before sending
Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) into the corner. Marvin then served a ball into the box where
Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) was able to get on the end of it and send a header inside the far post.
Dominican tacked on one more goal before the half as
Enzo Berrini (Bolingbrook, Ill.) carried into the Cougars' 18-yard box before slotting a pass to Alvarez who flicked a shot off his heel. Alvarez's shot caromed off a defender before finding its way into the back of the goal.
The Stars added an insurance goal in the second half as Berrini scored his fourth of the season.
"We came out today and executed what we have been working on in training," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach. "We had a lot more fluidity in the final third of the field and created better scoring opportunities because of it."
The Stars outshot the Cougars 23-9, putting 15 shots on goal compared to just four shots on frame for Concordia. Dominican's
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) logged four saves to pick up his sixth shutout of the season and lower his goals against average to 0.82.
The Stars will enjoy the weekend off before returning to action on Tuesday, October 29. Dominican will travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on the MSOE Raiders in the Stars' final regular season match.
