Dominican Dropped By Sabres In NACC Opener

Box Score The Dominican University men's basketball team was outrebounded 45-23, surrendering 16 offensive rebounds, in a 71-63 loss at the hands of the Marian University Sabres in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Stars to 0-5 on the season heading into Tuesday's matchup with the Rockford College Regents.

With the score tied at 11-11, the Stars went on an 8-0 run capped by a steal and lay-in by Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) to open their largest lead of the game (19-11) with 11:22 to play in the opening period.

Marian stormed back pulling to within one, 21-20, on a second-chance basket by Cody Veleke and then pulled ahead as Montrell Hobbs knocked down a pair of free throws on the Sabres next possession.

The teams traded leads until Drew Binversie's layup with 2:26 to play in the half sparked a 6-0 run by the Sabres to close out the opening half as Marian took a 33-27 lead into the break.

Sam Koslowski's three-point jumper with 18:10 to play pushed the Sabres' lead to 42-33, their largest lead of the night.

Dominican spent the next 14 minutes chipping away at the lead, eventually pulling to within one, 62-61, on a step-back jumper by Ryan Risley (Oak Lawn, Ill.) with 4:28 to play but the Sabres answered with a three by Elan Slovik.

Dominican's Josh Mayberry (Detroit, Mich.) cut the lead in half on the Stars' following possession before the Stars went scoreless over the final 3:50 to fall to the host Sabres.

The Stars converted on just 8 of 17 attempts from the foul line while Marian went 16-for-20 at the charity stripe.

Dominican, led by Mayberry's 18 points, shot 26-for-53 from the field. Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) added 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field while Risley came off the bench to score 16 points in 29 minutes.

The Sabres, shooting 25-for-59 from the field, were paced by Veleke's 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

The Stars return home for just their second home game of the season on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
