Berrini Scores Two To Lead Stars Into NACC Finals

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team posted a 5-0 shutout victory over the visiting Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons behind a pair of goals from senior Enzo Berrini (Bolingbrook, Ill.) on Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2013 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament.

Berrini put the Stars on the board in the 31st minute as he beat the Falcons' Alec Brew to the far post on a shot from ten yards out just to the left of the Falcons' six-yard box.

Berrini's first half tally was one of just three shots the Stars managed to put on frame despite holding a 12-3 advantage in shots over the Falcons.  Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) logged two saves in the first half, including a diving save off of a header by Concordia Wisconsin's Justin Clayton in the 12th minute, keeping the match scoreless at the time.

Dominican's offense exploded in the second half.  Berrini got the first of the Stars' four second-half tallies, finding the back of the net in the 50th minute after teammate Marco Alvarez carried toward the endline before sliding a pass to Berrini.

In the 63rd minute, freshman Zach Venzon (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was on the receiving end of an assist from Alvarez, notching his first collegiate goal to put the Stars on top 3-0.

The Stars then closed out the match with a pair of goals in the final ten minutes.  First it was Alvarez that finished off a long throw from Gabriel Garcia (Chicago, Ill.) and then Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa), who got an assist on Alvarez's goal, scored his fifth goal of the season as he got on the end of Frankie Saiz's (Naperville, Ill.) service on a Stars' restart.

With the win, the Stars move to 11-4-2 on the season and advance to the championship round of the 2013 NACC Men's Soccer Tournament.

""We played a lethargic first half but came out and played better in the second half," said head coach Erick Baumann when asked about the Stars' win. "This time of year is all about advancing and we are advancing to the tourney final.  There is still work to do."
