Stars Reign Supreme, Assert NACC Dominance Again

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team extended their conference tournament championship streak to eight on Saturday afternoon, claiming their 12th consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament with a convincing 3-0 win over the sixth-seeded Edgewood College Eagles in River Forest Saturday afternoon.

"This is an inexperienced and young team that won our share of the conference regular season championship and earned our way back into the NCAA National Tournament by winning our conference tournament championship this afternoon," commented 19th-year head coach Erick Baumann when asked about his 2013 squad. "This group bought in, stuck together and got it done."

The Stars offense smothered the usually stingy Edgewood College defense in the early going, ripping four shots and earning four corner kicks in the first ten minutes, eventually finding the back of the net as Eli Sherman (Columbia, Mo.) headed home Ryan Ybarra's corner kick service in the tenth minute, beating Edgewood's Chad Stivers to the back post.

The Stars' offense continued to fly around the field, tacking on another goal in the 36th minute as RJ Dralle (Oak Brook, Ill.) got on the end of Enzo Berrini's (Bolingbrook, Ill.) corner service, flicking a header into the back of the Eagles' goal.

Less than 90 seconds later, Dominican put a flurry of shots on Edgewood's Stivers eventually adding an own goal as Stivers made the initial save of a Frankie Saiz header but Stivers then pushed the ball into his goal as he tried gather the ball into his arms.

Dominican's three goals does not tell the entire story as Dominican fired 20 shots at Stivers putting eight on goal and hitting a post with another shot. On the opposite end of the field, Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) faced just one shot, turning away a shot from 15-yards out by Edgewood's Evan Rogaczewski.

"Our players really came out flying to start the game today and got on the board early," said Baumann when asked about his team's first half pressure."

In the second 45, Edgewood got their share of possession and chances, but Gongora made four second half saves to post his seventh shutout of the season.

"Give credit to [Edgewood's] Coach [Tim] Alexander, his staff and players," said Baumann. "There was no quit in them today."

The Stars, now 12-4-2 on the season, will enjoy an off day on Sunday before finding out the who, when and where of their 2013 NCAA Division III National Tournament Appearance on Monday as the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Selection Show streams live at NCAA.com at 12:00 p.m.

"I'm excited to start preparing for the NCAA Tournament," said Baumann. "Our program has a winning tradition we are proud of. That tradition brings high expectations each and every year. This group understands that pressure and takes pride in the tradition."
