Box Score Anthony Keener (Carol Stream, Ill.) buried a three with nine seconds remaining in regulation to ice a 64-62 win for the Dominican University men’s basketball team over the Rockford College Regents in the quarterfinals of the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Tournament. The Stars shot just 4-for-15 from behind the three-point arc in the game and Keener was just 2-for-7 but the sophomore knocked down the biggest shot of the game as the Stars scrambled to avoid the Regents’ trap while clinging to a one-point lead in the final minute.
The Stars led by as many as nine in the first half, leading from the opening tip all the way until Grant Olsen knocked down back-to-back jumpers to give Rockford their first lead, 26-24, with 1:06 to play in the first and that is the way the first half ended. Neither team could find a rhythm offensively in the opening period, shooting a combined 18-for-62 from the field.
The NAC South foes traded leads early in the second half until Rockford used a 9-1 spurt to open their largest lead, 44-37, with 11:28 to play.
Dominican stormed back with a 10-0 run of its own, sparked by a
Ryan Risley (Oak Lawn, Ill.) three-pointer, to climb back in front 47-44 with 8:17 to play. The Stars continued to play with lead, building up a six-point, 53-47, lead as
Michal Bobek (Orland Hills, Ill.) knocked down a pair of free throws with 6:15 remaining.
Rockford climbed all the way back over the next five minutes, eventually taking the lead 60-59 with 1:14 left in the second as Scott Suchy drove to the basket for two of his 16 points in the game.
Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) put the Stars back out in front on Dominican’s next possession and the Stars dug in for a stop on the defensive end of the floor to set up Keener’s dagger to push the Stars into the NAC semifinals.
Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) led four in double-figures scoring for Dominican, with 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting, going 5-for-8 at the foul line. Keener added 14 while Harris and
Josh Ward (Burr Ridge, Ill.) dropped in 11 points apiece.
David Dixon paced the Regents with a game-high 20 points on 6-for-18 shooting from the field and going 6-for-7 at the free throw line. Dixon also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in 17 games this season.
Dominican improves to 10-16 with the win and will face the Aurora University Spartans in the NAC Tournament Semifinals on Tuesday night. The Spartans topped Benedictine University 87-67 in their quarterfinal contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Aurora’s Thornton Gymnasium.
