First Half Run Dooms Stars In Non-Conference Tilt

Box Score The Webster University Gorloks outscored the Stars 31-15 over a 13-minute span in the first half to open a 19-point lead, 36-17, with 5:24 remaining and the Dominican University men’s basketball team spent the rest of the night trying to dig out of the hole, eventually falling 76-69.  Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) matched a career-high with 29 points in the losing effort for the Stars.
 
After closing the first half on a 12-0 run, the Stars opened the second half on an 8-5 run to cut the deficit to 41-37 but the Gorloks answered with their own 14-5 run to go back up by 13, 55-42 with 13:35 to play.  The Stars would eventually pull to within six at 70-64 but could not get any closer.
 
DeRoo went 10-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 at the foul line and pulled down a team-high five rebounds in 33 minutes.
 
Danny Zehner paced the Gorloks offensive attach with 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three-point range.  Ahmad Smith added 12 while Roman Robinson dropped in ten despite fouling out with 3:09 remaining.
 
 The loss drops the Stars to 9-15 overall with one regular season game remaining before the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament that is slated to open play on Saturday, February 16.  Before that, Dominican will close out the 2012-2013 regular season schedule with NAC South front-runner, Aurora University on Tuesday night.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
