The Dominican University women's tennis team opened Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) on Saturday, dropping a pair of matches on the road to the Marian University Sabres and the Lakeland College Muskies.
In the morning match against the Sabres, the Stars took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as the Stars' number two and three doubles teams both posted 8-1 victories.
Stephanie Castaneda (Mendota, Ill.) and
Kelly Pompea (Lynwood, Ill.) teamed at three doubles for their first win of the season and then went and picked up singles victories at five and six.
Pompea, a freshman, picked up her first singles victory, knocking off Marian's Melissa Spannbauer at five singles. Pompea dropped the first set 2-6 but then rallied to wins sets two and three 6-4, 6-3. Castaneda rolled over her counterpart at six singles, dropping Ahtyanna Lyons 6-1, 6-0.
After the conclusion of the grueling four-hour NACC opener, the Stars traveled to Sheboygan where they got shutout by the Muskies, 9-0.
The pair of losses drops the Stars to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in the NACC. Dominican will be back in action on Monday, traveling to Madison, Wis., to take on the defending NACC champions, the Edgewood College Eagles.
