Box Score 4 The Dominican University women's volleyball team opened the 2013 season this weekend, traveling up to Winona, Minn., and sweeping through the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic hosted by St. Mary's University.
The Stars dropped just two sets all weekend, rolling through St. Mary's and UW-La Crosse Friday by scores of 3-1 and then swept through Gustavus Adolphus and St. Catherine on Saturday by scores of 3-0.
Dominican's offense was run through
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) who averaged a tournament-best 12.36 assists per set. Wilson's favorite hitter was senior
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) who averaged a tournament-best 4.86 kills per set while hitting .310.
Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) and
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) also ranked among the tournament leaders, averaging 3.17 and 2.62 kills per set respectively.
Defensively, junior
Cheyanne Kelly (Kalamazoo, Mich.) shined for the Stars, racking up a tournament-best 7.17 digs per set.
The Stars return to River Forest to play in front of the home crowd for the first time in 2013 as they host UW-Whitewater and Elmhurst College for a tri-match on Wednesday. Elmhurst was ranked fourth in the AVCA Top 25 preseason poll while the Warhawks were ranked 13th in the preseason poll.
