Stars Back In the Hunt, Sweep NACC Duals

The Dominican University women's tennis climbed right back into the hunt for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) postseason on Saturday, picking up a pair of conference dual victories with 6-3 wins over Wisconsin Lutheran College and Alverno College.

In the morning match against the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors, the Stars took a 2-1 lead after doubles play behind wins at two and three doubles. The Stars' combination of Megan Hickey (Plainfield, Ill.) and Natalie Bestler (Hinsdale, Ill.) improved to 5-2 in NACC play with an 8-2 win over the Warriors' Bethany Soderlund and Amanda Pearson while Stephanie Castaneda (Mendota, Ill.) and Katelyn Ratterman (Carol Stream, Ill.) picked up an 8-1 win at number three doubles.

In singles play, the middle of the Stars' lineup secured the victory with Marbeya Berner (New Lenox, Ill.), Hickey and Bestler picking up wins at two, three and four singles while Kelly Pompea (Lynwood, Ill.) added an insurance point with a clean sweep (6-0, 6-0) at number six singles.

In the matinee match against the visiting Alverno College Inferno, the Stars swept doubles play and then secured the Stars' third straight victory as Berner, Hickey and Pompea picked up singles wins at two, three and six singles respectively.

With a pair of singles victories on the day, Berner is now 5-4 at number two singles for Dominican on the season and riding her own three-match winning streak.

Dominican will take a break from NACC action on Monday, hosting the North Central College Cardinals for a non-conference dual. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m. at the Stars' home courts in Forest Park.
