Box Score The 2013 season got underway for the Dominican University men's soccer team on Monday afternoon, as
Marco Alvarez's (Aurora, Ill.) second-half goal lifted the Stars past the Greenville College Panthers.
The Stars and Panthers played a scoreless first half with Dominican holding a slight 8-6 advantage in shots with each side putting one shot on frame. The best chance of the opening 45 minutes came in the 39
th minute as Greenville's Jacob Krisher found himself near the top of the 18-yard box with a clear look at the goal. Kirsher's shot went right into the hands of the Stars'
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.), Dominican's freshman goalkeeper making his first collegiate start.
The score remained even until the 51
st minute when
Mitch Corsten (Bloomingdale, Ill.) was able to play a ball to
Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) over the top of the Panthers' backline. Marvin carried the ball towards the goal before sliding a pass to Alvarez who was able to guide the ball across the goal line for his first goal of the season.
The Stars continued to press forward nearly scoring on a corner kick in the 65
th minute but freshman
Eli Sherman's (Columbia, Mo.) diving header pushed wide. The Stars continued to be dangerous on restarts as Corsten's header sailed just above crossbar in the 79
th minute.
The Panthers regrouped and made a push over the final five minutes, pressing forward in the 89
th minute as Krisher actually beat Gongora who had come off his line but Corsten took the ball off the goal line to preserve the shutout victory for Dominican.
The Stars held an 18-12 advantage in shots, doubling up the Panthers in shots on goal, 6-3. Dominican managed to win 11 corner kick opportunities while giving up just two to the Panthers. Gongora picked up the shutout victory in his first collegiate start, logging three saves.
The Stars will return to action on Saturday, September 7, traveling to St. Louis, Mo., to take on the Washington University Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
