Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team traveled down I-55 to St. Louis to take on the Washington University-St. Louis Bears in a Central Region matchup, knocking off the Bears 3-2 on the road.
"This was a battle and a good win on the road against a good team," commented Dominican University head coach Erick Baumann when asked about the contest. "We had great support from alums, families and friends that made the trip to the game and that was a huge catalyst for the way we came out and played early."
Baumann's Stars raced out to a 2-0 lead at the half behind first half tallies from
Alex Rohder (Orland Park, Ill.) and
Robbie Baird (Columbia, Mo.). Dominican then stunned the host Bears in the 52
nd minute as
Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) danced into the top of the 18-yard box before getting off a shot that beat the Bears' Jonathan Jebson inside the far post and into the back of the goal.
Ybarra's tally would prove to be the game-winner as the Bears looked to mount a comeback, scoring a pair of goals two minutes apart starting with Connor Roach's second goal of the season in the 77
th minute for the 3-2 final.
"We executed our game plan but need to be able to do it for a full 90 minutes," said Baumann when asked about the game's exciting finish. "When you become complacent, top opponents will take advantage of it like they did tonight."
Washington University held a slight 16-14 advantage in shots while the Stars managed to put eight shots on frame compared to five for the Bears. Dominican also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) picked up his second victory of the season in goal for the Stars, making three saves in just his second college start.
The Stars return home to River Forest to take on the Elmhurst College Bluejays on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on the Stars' West Campus Field.
