Box Score The Dominican University Stars hung on for a thrilling 64-62 win in another chapter of the River Forest rivalry between the Dominican University men's basketball team and Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Tuesday night. The Stars who led by as many as 16 in the first half, scored the final four points of the game to erase an two-point deficit in the final two minutes, picking up their second win in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action.
Trailing 13-12 in the first half, the Stars went on a 15-0 run that spanned 4:37 and was capped by a
Ryan Risley (Oak Lawn, Ill.) three-point jumper with under 7:30 to play in the half. After the Cougars' Jared Gosse snapped Concordia Chicago's scoreless drought, the Stars got back-to-back baskets by seniors
Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) and
Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) to give Dominican its largest lead of the night at 31-15 with under six minutes to play in the opening half.
The Cougars answered with a 14-4 run of their own to close out the first half and narrow the Stars' lead down to 35-29 at the break.
Harris and DeRoo scored ten points apiece in the first half, going a combined 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from the foul line.
Concordia Chicago continued to cut into the Dominican lead in the first six-plus minutes of the half, eventually evening the score at 40-40 with 13:23 remaining on a pair of free throws by Gosse. Back at the foul line less than thirty seconds later, the Cougars took just their second lead of the game as Mike Walmer, who finished with a team-high 19 points, converted a pair of attempts at the foul line.
The rest of the half featured six more ties and three lead changes, with Dominican taking the lead for good on
Josh Mayberry's (Canton, Mich.) three with 1:46 to play. The shot put the Stars up 63-62 with Harris knocking down one of two free throws with 0:14 left in half.
The Cougars got one last good look at the basket as Walmer drove the lane on an isolation attempt, but his lay in rimmed out and Marcus Elston's put-back attempt was too strong as time expired.
Mayberry finished with a team-high 19 points for the Stars while Harris and DeRoo added 18 points apiece in the winning effort. Harris also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double effort and fifth of the season.
The win improves the Stars to 2-12 on the season and 2-8 in NACC play. The Stars have a short turnaround, traveling to Benedictine University on Thursday night to take on the 6-9 Eagles. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
