Box Score The Dominican University men's basketball team forced eight turnovers and held the Maranatha Baptist University Crusaders to just 8-for-29 shooting from the field in the second half to rally from a six-point halftime deficit and post an 80-65 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon in the Igini Sports Forum.
The Crusaders' Brady Moses scored 21 points in the first half as Maranatha opened a 40-34 lead at the break. Moses knocked down six of his seven attempts from behind the three-point arc in the opening 20 minutes. The Crusaders' freshman guard gave Maranatha Baptist its largest lead of the night at 28-12 with 11:50 remaining in the opening period as he scored seven straight, including back-to-back threes.
The Stars whittled the lead all the way down to five, 37-32, as
Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.) knocked down a pair of free throws. Moses answered with his sixth three of the half before the Stars'
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) took the ball the length of floor for a lay in with under ten seconds to play in the half to move the scored to 40-34 at the break.
The Stars defense clamped down in the second half, smothering Moses and holding the Crusaders' guard to just seven points in the second half on 1-for-5 shooting from the field.
On the Stars' offensive end, it was Dominican's freshman guard that carried the offense as Mayberry poured in 20 of his team-high 26 after the break, going 5-for-9 from the field and 10-for-12 at the foul line.
Mike Bobek (Orland Hills, Ill.) gave the Stars' their first lead since 8-7 with a jumper with 16:29 to play to put the Stars on top 42-41.
Minutes later with the scored tied at 44-44, Dominican's
Josh Ward (Burbank, Ill.) sparked a 12-0 run for the Stars' with a three-point play and then capped the run with a three to put the Stars up 56-44 with 11:53 remaining in the second half.
The Crusaders managed to cut the Stars lead to seven, but Mayberry scored the Stars' final ten points to seal the victory.
Mayberry led four in double-figures scoring for Dominican, with
Logan Harris and DeRoo dropping in 16 and 15 respectively. Ward scored ten points in 23 minutes off the Stars' bench.
Moses finished with 28 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field, going 7-for-10 from long distance and 7-for-10 from the foul line.
The Stars forced 19 turnovers, scoring 26 points off turnovers in the winning effort.
The win improves the Stars to 3-13 overall. Dominican will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting the Aurora University Spartans. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
