Stars Open 2014 With NACC Win At WLC

Box Score The Dominican University men's basketball team opened up the 2014 portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 74-71 win at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Trailing by three at the break, 35-32, the Stars went scoreless over the first 4:30 of the second half as the Warriors opened up their largest lead of the game, 40-32, before Mike Bobek (Orland Hills, Ill.) knocked down a three to spark the Stars' offense.

A lay in by Logan Harris (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) less than a minute later narrowed the Stars' gap to 42-39 with 14:38 to play before Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) started to heat up. Mayberry scored the Stars' next seven points before fellow freshman Kevin Mack (Detroit, Mich.) knocked down a three to even the score at 49-49 with 9:30 remaining.

Mack's three ignited an 8-0 run for Dominican as the Stars' opened a 54-49 lead on a pair of free throws by Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.), who was back in the Stars' lineup after missing the Stars' last five games.

The Warriors twice cut the Dominican lead down to one over the next four minutes but Dominican answered with a basket each time before hanging on for the win down the stretch.

Mayberry finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-for-21 shooting from the field. Mayberry, now averaging 13.9 points per game, scored 15 in the second half to fuel the Dominican comeback.

DeRoo chipped in 18 points, going 12-for-15 from the foul line while Harris added ten points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

As a team, Dominican shot 9-for-14 from behind the three-point stripe. Mayberry connected on three of four attempts while Harris and Bobek knocked down a pair of three's apiece.

Dominican, now 1-10 on the season, will be back in action on Tuesday when the Stars host the Edgewood College Eagles. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
