The Dominican University men's soccer dominated the stat sheet but took 105 minutes to break through, claiming a 1-0 win in double overtime in the Stars' Division Street rivalry matchup with the Concordia Chicago Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
After peppering the Concordia Chicago goalkeeper with 27 shots through regulation and three more in the first overtime, Dominican finally found the back of the net in the 105
th minute, on their 32
nd shot of the match, as
Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) got on the end of
Gabriel Garcia's (Midway, Ill.)'s restart service, flicking a header into the back of the goal for the Stars' eighth consecutive win.
Â
"We struggled to get on the board and put the game away today," said Dominican's head coach Erick Baumann when asked about the match. "They deserve some credit though as they defended extremely well and made it difficult to break them down but we found a way to get the win and that's what we needed to do."
Â
In total, the Stars put 18 shots on frame while allowing just two shots total, one on goal, for the Cougars. Dominican also earned eight corner kicks while allowing just one corner for Concordia Chicago.
Â
The win pushes the Stars to 11-4-2 on the season and 8-1-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Stars will take a break from conference play this weekend, traveling to Michigan to take on the Olivet College Comets on Sunday. The Stars then return to River Forest to host the MSOE Raiders in a NACC tilt on the West Campus pitch. For the Stars, a share of the 2014 NACC regular season title is at stake when they meet the NACC-leading Raiders on Wednesday.
