The Dominican University women's volleyball team rounded out a perfect conference regular season with a three-set (25-17, 25-13, 25-16) win over the visiting Lakeland College Muskies on Saturday afternoon in the Igini Sports Forum. With the win, the Stars claimed just the third Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) championship in program history and only the second outright championship.
Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) paced the Stars' attack, knocking down a match-high ten kills in the winning effort while
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) and
Kim Greiner (St. Louis, Mo.) added six kills each while playing in two sets apiece.
As a team, with
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) running the offense, Dominican hit .252 for the match, collecting 40 kills on 107 attack attempts while committing just 13 errors. Wilson, the national leader in assists per set, doled out 33 assists while spreading the ball around to nine different attackers.
Chambers rounded out a double-double effort, with a match-high ten digs and Dominican tallied six total blocks at the net.
Becca Fritz (Mt. Carroll, Ill.) and Zanoni had three block assists each while
Tessa Griparis (Belleair, Fla.) and
Kendyl Todd (Crete, Ill.) picked up two block assists apiece.
The Muskies, led by Courtney Naser's eight kills on 14 attempts, managed to hit just .045 for the match.
The Stars, now 21-8 overall and 11-0 in the NACC, will close out the regular season portion of their 2014 season next weekend with four matches at the Benedictine University Eagle Classic in Lisle, Illinois. The Stars will then open NACC Tournament play on Thursday, November 6, hosting the winner of the Lakeland at Aurora University match.
