After opening the 2014 season on the road for the first 20 matches, the Dominican University women's volleyball team impressed its home crowd with a convincing three-set (25-19, 25-16, 25-16) over the defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) champion Edgewood College Eagles to move to 3-0 in conference play.
Â
With the first set tied at 16-16, Dominican was ignited by a kill by
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.), as the Stars' junior outside hitter tooled the Edgewood block to spark a three-point run for the Stars to open a 19-16 lead and Dominican never looked back.
Â
Dominican hit .350 for the match as
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) dished out 44 assists to six different hitters for the Stars.Â
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Foote shared match-high honors with 12 kills apiece. Zanoni hit a hefty .688, committing just one error on 16 attempts.Â
Tessa Griparis (Belleair, Fla.) and
Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) chipped in eight kills apiece while freshman
Kendyl Todd (Crete, Ill.) added six kills in the winning effort.
Â
Edgewood was paced by junior Jordan Winkler who collected 11 kills on 35 attacks, committing six errors on the night.
Â
Defensively, Dominican's Wilson and Edgewood's Winkler rounded out double-double efforts with ten digs apiece. Edgewood libero Rachel Tesch added ten digs of her own while Dominican won the battle at the net with four blocks, including three (2 BS, 1 BA) by Zanoni.
Â
With the win, Dominican improves to 13-8 on the year under first-year head coach Jeanne Czipri. The Stars return to the court on Wednesday, playing host to the Marian University Sabres. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start in the Igini Sports Forum.
