The Dominican University men's soccer team picked up their fourth straight victory and third consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Tuesday afternoon in River Forest.Â
Â
"The guys did a real nice job executing today's game plan," commented Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach in his 20
th season. "I've been pleased with our progress and the guys know what we need to keep doing to be successful."
Â
Dominican dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Warriors 23-6 and winning five corners while surrendering just two.
Â
Eli Sherman (Columbia, Mo.) was credited with the game-winning goal, collecting a rebound of
Ryan Ybarra's (Des Plaines, Ill.)Â shot in the 30
th minute. The scoring opportunity was created by
Trent Miller's (Rockford Ill.) long throw into the 18-yard box that skipped through the six-yard box right to Ybarra. Ybarra settled with his chest and one-timed a shot that was stopped by the Warriors' Cedric Guichard but the rebound bounced right to Sherman who knocked in his third goal of the season.
Â
Nine minutes later, the Stars added to their lead as Miller served a ball on a restart from beyond midfield into the 18-yard box.Â
Gabriel Garcia (Midway, Ill.) was the first to the ball and slotted a pass through the six-yard box where
Carmelo Abate (Bartlett, Ill.) was able to get on the end of the pass and beat Guichard for his third goal of the season.
Â
The score remained 2-0 into the 70
th minute before the Stars tacked on an insurance goal.Â
Frankie Saiz (Naperville, Ill.) scored his third goal in the last two games, receiving a pass from Ybarra who gained the endline up the left flank before sliding a pass towards the middle of the field.Â
Jose Becerra (Waukegan, Ill.) made a play on the ball but ultimately let the pass roll through to Saiz who was streaking up the middle of the field.
Â
The second half saw 27 fouls and five cautions while the first half was much less physical with just eight total fouls.
Â
"We played very well in all aspects of the game in the first half today but we were a little too undisciplined in the second," said Baumann.
Â
The win pushes the Stars' overall record to 7-4-2 on the year and 5-1-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Dominican will go for its eighth win in ten matches on Saturday when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Warner Park.
