Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stars Cruise To Win Over Warriors

The Dominican University women's soccer team posted their second consecutive shutout on Wednesday afternoon, this time blanking the visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors, 4-0, to move to 7-5-0 on the season and 4-2-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).

The Stars put the game away early, scoring three goals in the first 22 minutes while limiting Wisconsin Lutheran to just two shots in the opening half.

Kelli Iovino (Arlington Heights, Ill.) netted the game-winner, dribbling through the Warriors' backline to draw Rachel Sebald off her line before sliding a shot on the ground inside the far post from eight yards out.  Nathalie Mathis (Wauconda, Ill.) created a turnover out near midfield that led to a give-and-go with Iovino and Taylor Adler (Shorewood, Ill.) that led to the score, the team-leading eighth of the season for Iovino.

Nine minutes later Kelly Gerwitz (Florissant, Mo.) netted her fifth goal of the season as Adler sent a cross through the box that Gerwitz settled before striking a shot with her left foot from seven yards out.  Sebald got a hand on the ball but Gerwitz had enough pace on the ball to slip it into the net.

After assisting on the first two goals of the match, Adler got her own tally as she worked a give-and-go with Leah Tednes (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) near the top of the 18-yard box that got Adler 1v1 with a defender.  After cutting towards the middle of the field, Adler poked a shot that slipped past Sebald to give Dominican a 3-0 advantage at the half.

Dominican continued to dominate the stat sheet in the second half, peppering the Wisconsin Lutheran goal with 14 shots but could not manage to get one past Sebald until the 86th minute when Alyssa Messina (Elgin, Ill.) notched her first goal of the season.

Sara Stepanovich (Des Plaines, Ill.) shared time in goal with Vanessa Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) to pick up the combined shutout for the Stars.  The duo faced just four shots the entire match with Stepanovich logging two saves in the winning effort.

Dominican will be on the road on Saturday, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin, to take on the Edgewood College Eagles in NACC play.  The Eagles currently stand at 4-1-0 in the NACC, one place ahead of the Stars in the conference standings.  Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. at Warner Park.
