The Dominican University men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season on Saturday afternoon in Appleton, Wisconsin, falling to the host Lawrence University Vikings 66-49 behind 14 points from freshman
Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) in his first collegiate game.
Lawrence opened the game on a 9-2 run over the first four minutes before the Stars went a short 4-0 that narrowed the Stars' gap to 9-6 on a jumper by Robertson. However, the Stars' offense went through a 6:33 scoreless drought as Lawrence built the lead back up to 17-6 midway through the opening half.
Dominican was able to mount a comeback, closing out the half on 8-0 run that included a Robertson three-point play and a long three by sophomore
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) that closed out the first half scoring.
The Stars went just 9-for-27 from the field in the first half, trailing 25-21 at the break.
Dominican trimmed the Lawrence lead down to three, 27-24, early in the second half as Mayberry connected on the front-end of a two-shot foul but the Vikings answered with a 20-4 run to build up a 47-29 lead with 11:14 to play and never looked back.
Robertson went 5-for-9 from the field and added four rebounds and three assists to pace the Stars. Dominican shot 34.7-percent from the field but managed to go just 4-for-16 from three-point distance.
The Vikings, led by Troy Miller's 21 points, went 25-for-55 from the field, including 11-for-26 from three. Miller was 7-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc.
Dominican will return to River Forest and host the University of Chicago on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
