Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stars Outlasted By Britons

The Dominican University women's basketball team held a slight lead midway through the second half before the Albion College Britons went on a 32-11 run to close out the game in a 69-47 loss for the Stars in non-conference action on Tuesday night in Albion, Michigan.

The Stars shot over 42-percent from the field in the first half, including 6-for-14 from three, to overcome 12 first half turnovers and trail just 32-30 at the break.  Claudia DeNigris (Addison, Ill.) poured in 12 first half points, including knocking down four field goals from beyond the three-point arc, to help the Stars keep pace.

The Stars stayed within striking distance early in the second half, eventually taking a one-point lead, 38-37, on a Jasmyn Hardin (Cincinnati, Ohio) free throw with under 14 minutes to play.  However, the Britons scored on the following possession.  After a stop, the Britons got an offensive rebound and put-back before forcing a Stars' turnover and getting another second-chance basket to start the Britons' sprint to the finish.

DeNigris and Hardin shared team-high honors with 12 points apiece.  Angela Evola and Shamia Clark added six points apiece off the bench while Allie Tapanes tallied seven assists in her first start of the season.

The Britons were led by Erin Nelson and Mikeala Bromley who scored 18 and 16 points respectively.  The Britons shot 19-for-26 from the foul line and scored 38 points in the paint and 27 points off of 27 Dominican turnovers.

The Stars will open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Saturday, hosting the Marian University Sabres.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
