The Dominican University men's basketball team used a 6-0 run to open the second half to open a seven-point, 36-29, lead and then held on for a 66-65 win over the visiting MSOE Raiders on Saturday evening in the Igini Sports Forum.
Â
Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) scored a career-high 21 points in the winning effort, dropping in 14 in the second half on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. The freshman scored ten of the Stars' first 14 points in the second half as Dominican opened a seven-point lead, 46-39, with just over 13 minutes to play.
Â
MSOE narrowed the gap to two twice in the half but each time Dominican answered with a run of their own. The first time, the Stars scored six straight over a 1:50 span to push the lead back to eight, 56-48, with 6:43 to play.
Â
The Raiders answered with a 6-0 run of their own before Robertson drove the baseline with 1:16 to play to snap the Raiders' run.
Â
After a stop on the defensive end of the floor,
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) knocked down an uncontested three with 33 seconds to play to extend Dominican's lead to 61-54.
Â
After a lay in by Connor Patterson for the Raiders, Mayberry knocked down one of two free throws before Austin Stueck knocked down the first of three three's in the final 12 seconds but the Stars were able to convert on all four of their free throws in the final ten seconds to preserve the win at the line.
Â
Robertson finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists to pace the Stars while
Quinn Pokora (Mundelein, Ill.) added 15 points in the winning effort. Mayberry chipped in ten points, all in the second half, converting on five of his six attempts at the free throw line.
Â
Stueck led the Raiders with a game-high 30 points, surpassing 1,000 career points in the process. The junior forward shot 11-for-23 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point distance.
Â
The win snaps an eight game losing streak for the Stars, pushing their record to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). Dominican will head up to Mequon, Wisconsin, on Tuesday to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
