The Dominican University men's basketball team outscored the Rockford University Regents 45-41 in the second half but could not erase a 20-point first half deficit in an 89-73 loss on the road for the Stars on Tuesday night.
Rockford shot near 60-percent from the field in the opening half as they built up a 48-28 lead at the break. The Regents' John O'Bryan poured in 28 points in the first 20 minutes to lead the way for the Regents. O'Bryan was 9-for-11 from the field, going 5-for-6 from three-point range, including knocking down a three with ten seconds remaining in the half.
As they have done in each of the last three Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) games, the Stars narrowed down the lead in the second half, this time closing the gap to seven, 73-66, on a
Rich Bodee (Darien, Ill.) three with 6:35 to play but could not get any closer as the Regents ended the game on a 16-7 run.
Bodee finished with a team-high 25 points off the Stars' bench, pouring in 20 in the second half. The sophomore forward shot 9-for-17 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line in 23 minutes.
Quinn Pokora (Mundelein, Ill.) and
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) added 15 points apiece for Dominican while freshman
Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) added 14 in the losing effort.
As a team the Stars shot 42-percent from the field (27-64) while Rockford shot just under 50-percent (27-55) led by O'Bryan's season-high 35 points.
The loss drops the Stars to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the NACC. Dominican will hit the road on Saturday, heading to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to take on the Lakeland College Muskies (5-0, 2-0). Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
