Stars Fall Short At Rockford

Box Score The Dominican University men's basketball team erased a 19-point deficit but came up short on the road at Rockford University on Wednesday night, 92-83. Freshman Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) poured in a season-high 36 points in the losing effort, going 14-for-27 from the field including 3-for-5 from three-point range.

The Rockford Regents raced out to a 12-2 lead to open the game and led by as many as 19 points with 8:24 remaining in the first half before Dominican began to chip away at the Rockford lead.

Trailing 35-17, the Stars closed the first half on a 15-0 run over the final 4:52 of the half. The run, started by a lay in by Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.), included eight straight points scored by Mayberry and a three by Kevin Tiongson (Hoffman Estates, Ill.).

The Stars' run narrowed the gap all the way down to 35-32 at the break. Mayberry and Tiongson combined for 28 of Dominican's 32 first-half points. The duo was 12-for-19 from the field, 3-for-5 from three, while the rest of the team was just 2-for-12 from the field and 0-for-4 from three.

Dominican eventually took a one-point lead, 42-41, on a steal by Tiongson that led to a Mayberry basket in transition.

Scott Suchy put the Regents back out in front, scoring two of his 16 points, before DeRoo gave the Stars their final lead of the game on Dominican's next possession, dropping in two of his 15 second half points.

David Dixon's three on the Regents' next possession put the hosts back on top and after exchanging baskets over the next two and half minutes, the Regents went on a 11-2 run, ignited by a Suchy three-pointer, to open a nine point lead they would not relinquish.

DeRoo finished with 17 points and ten rebounds, his first double-double of the season, while Tiongson finished with 15 points, ten coming in the first half.

As a team, the Stars shot 43.5 percent (30-for-69) from the field and converted on 17 of 19 attempts from the foul line.

Rockford, led by David Dixon's 26 points, shot 53.4 percent (31-for-58) from the field.

The loss drops the Stars to 4-17 overall and 3-13 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Dominican will travel up to Mequon, Wis., on Saturday to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
