Stars Fall Short At The Buzzer

Box Score Josh Mayberry's (Canton, Mich.) three in the waning seconds was off the mark and the rebound was tapped out to Kyle Sherwin (White Lake, Mich.) but his attempt was blocked as the Dominican University men's basketball team dropped a 69-66 game against the host Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.

Dominican trailed by as many as 13 in the final four minutes of the first half but were able to cut the deficit to eight, 35-27, at the break as the Stars went on a 9-4 run capped by a Mayberry lay in the final two seconds of the half.

The Stars were outrebounded 20-13 in the first half, surrendering seven offensive rebounds that led to seven second chance points for the Falcons.

Dominican continued to chip away at the Falcons' lead in the second half, narrowing the gap down to 42-40 with 16:25 to play on a tip in by Taylor DeRoo (Holland, Mich.). DeRoo then tied the score, the first of four ties in the half, as took the ball the length of the floor for a basket in transition.

After Mark Scholz put the Falcons back in front with a pair of free throws, DeRoo evened the score again with another lay in. The Stars' Josh Ward (Burr Ridge, Ill.) then nailed a triple after a Falcons' turnover to give Dominican their first lead of the game 47-44.

The teams traded baskets and traded leads for most of the next seven minutes until a Mayberry three gave Dominican their largest lead of the game, 59-55, with 8:04 to play.

After a scoreless drought of over two minutes for both teams, Eric Kittel narrowed the Dominican lead, knocking down a pair of free throws before Steven Brodie's three put the Falcons back on top 60-59 with 5:09 to play.

Sherwin put the Stars back in front, scoring two of his six with just under five minutes to play, but a pair of offensive rebounds on the Falcons' next possession sparked a 7-0 run that was capped by another Brodie three, putting the Falcons back on top 67-61.

The Stars cut the deficit back to one at 67-66, going on a 5-0 run capped by three by Ward, but Dominican went 0-3 from the field the rest of the way while the Falcons converted on two of four free throw attempts in the final minute to preserve the victory.

Mayberry finished with a game-high 20 points, his fifth 20-point effort of the season, on 8-for-20 shooting from the field, including 4-for-7 from three. DeRoo added 16 points and five rebounds in the losing effort.

The Falcons were led by Keith Kahlfeldt and Mark Scholz who scored 16 points apiece. Brodie finished with 15 points off the bench, going 4-for-9 from the field, 2-for-5 from three, and 5-for-5 from the foul line.

The Stars outshot the Falcons 41-percent to 37-percent but the Falcons shot 22-for-35 from the foul line while Dominican converted on eight of just nine attempts from the charity stripe.

The loss drops the Stars to 4-18 overall and 3-14 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). Dominican will host Benedictine University on Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in the Igini Sports Forum.
