Stars Sweep Sabres And Muskies To Open NACC Play

The Dominican University women's tennis team dominated the Marian University Sabres and Lakeland College Muskies to open the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) regular season on Saturday.  With the wins, the Stars move to 2-1 on the season with the Benedictine University Eagles coming to Forest Park to take on the Stars on Wednesday.

The Stars needed less than two hours to sweep through the Marian Sabres, 9-0, on Saturday morning at the Oak Park Tennis and Fitness Centre.  Dominican swept the three doubles flights all by identical 8-1 scores.  Marbeya Berner (New Lenox, Ill.) and Jillian Metcalf (Oak Lawn, Ill.) picked up their first win of the season at number one doubles while Carmelita Villalobos (Addison, Ill.) and Morganne Schmidt (West Dundee, Ill.) picked up their second straight win at number three doubles.

The Stars then won all six singles flights in straight sets.  Mady Corrie (Frankfort, Ind.) and Schmidt each picked up their first collegiate victory at numbers five and six singles respectively.  Corrie topped Kaylyn Fischer 6-0, 6-0 while Schmidt rolled through Chelsea Schoenick, 6-1, 6-0.

The Stars continued to roll in their afternoon match, sinking the Muskies, 8-1.  Dominican again swept the doubles action, with Berner and Metcalf pulling out a tight match, 8-6 at number one singles over the Muskies' team of Lynn Pipke and Emily DesJardins.

In singles action, the Muskies tallied their lone point at number two singles, with DesJardins topping Megan Hickey (Plainfield, Ill.), 6-3, 6-1.  Dominican's Villalobos remained perfect in her first three college tennis matches, topping Sarah Allman, 6-0, 6-3.

The Stars now stand at 2-1 on the season with three NACC matches on the schedule next week, starting with Benedictine on Wednesday.
