Stars Topple Titans

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans on the road Wednesday night in the Stars' final non-conference tune-up before Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action opens on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, Dominican got on the board in the 68th minute, taking advantage of a throw-in deep in the Titans' defensive third of the field.  Trent Miller's (Rockford Ill.) long throw was flicked through the box where Gabriel Garcia (Midway, Ill.) popped the ball back into the mix with Carlos Ramos (Carpentersville, Ill.) getting on the end of it and beating Mark Streid to the near post.  The score was the first of the season for Ramos who made his fourth start of the season for the Stars.

Dominican tacked on the eventual game-winner in the 83rd minute, turning a quick counter into a scoring opportunity.  Neftali Alejandre (Pilsen, Ill.) received the ball near midfield and spun one defender before sending Frankie Saiz (Naperville, Ill.) towards the endline.  Saiz bounced a pass through the Titans' goal box with Zach Venzon (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) making a run towards the goal and knocking the ball in for his first goal of the season.

Illinois Wesleyan finally found the back of the net in the 86th minute, snapping a streak of 295 minutes of shutout soccer for the Stars, but that was a close as the Titans would get.

The Titans held a slight, 11-10, advantage in shots while Dominican earned six corner kicks while giving up just three.

Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) made five saves in goal for the Stars while improving to 2-2-2 on the season.

The win pushes the Stars to 2-3-2 on the season heading into NACC play.  Dominican travels up to Mequon, Wisconsin, to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
