The Dominican University men's soccer team used every second of the overtime period before
Eli Sherman (Columbia, Mo.) found the back of the goal as time expired to lift the Stars to a 2-1 victory over the host Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday evening in Mequon, Wisconsin.
A Falcons' foul in the final thirty seconds of ovetime gave the Stars a restart deep in the final third.
Zach Venzon's (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) free kick on goal caromed right to the leg of Sherman who one-timed a shot with the ball crossing the goalline a fraction of a second before time expired. The score completed a come-from-behind victory for the Stars who trailed for 40 minutes after giving up a restart goal to the Falcons in the 44
th minute.
"We just didn't show up to play today," said Erick Baumann when asked about his team's performance. "It wasn't until late in the game that we started to play with some urgency and that was when we needed to be desperate and chase the scoreboard. It was nice to get a win; we just simply need to be better."
After outshooting the Stars 5-3 in the opening 45 minutes, the Falcons played to protect the lead in the second half, allowing Dominican to build on its attack. The Stars eventually evened the score in the 85
th minute as
Sonny Saiz (Naperville, Ill.) got on the end of
Gabriel Garcia's (Midway, Ill.) corner kick service at the back post to knock in the equalizer.
Dominican allowed the Falcons to take just one shot over the final 55 minutes, including the ten-minute overtime period, as the Stars doubled up the Falcons in shots for the game, 12-6.
The Stars are now unbeaten in their last four matches, improving to 3-3-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Stars return to the pitch on Tuesday, traveling to the Benedictine University Eagles for a NACC matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. under the lights.
