Late Goal Dooms Stars In NACC Opener

The Dominican University women's soccer team fell in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) opener to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday afternoon, 2-1, on a goal by the Falcons' Emily Ciesielczyk in the final 40 seconds of regular time.

After falling behind 1-0 on a free kick in the 22nd minute, Dominican evened the score on Kelli Iovino's (Arlington Heights, Ill.) team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 32nd minute.  Iovino made a run up the middle of the field eventually getting on a leg on the end of a cross from the right flank by Kelly Gerwitz (Florissant, Mo.) to beat the Falcons' goalkeeper to the near post.

The score remained even all the way into the 90th minute when Ciesielczyk dribbled 40 yards up the left flank before cutting a defender and making a run to goal before lifting a shot to beat Dominican's Sara Stepanovich (Des Plaines, Ill.) for the game-winning goal.

On paper the game was almost as close as the final score with the Falcons holding a slight 16-14 edge on shots, 7-5 advantage in shots on goal and 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The loss drops the Stars to 3-4-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in the NACC.  Dominican will be back in action on Wednesday night, traveling to Lisle to take on the Benedictine University Eagles.  The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
