The Dominican University women's tennis team pulled out a thrilling 5-4 win over the Aurora University Spartans on Wednesday evening in Forest Park. Freshman
Carmelita Villalobos (Addison, Ill.) secured the clinching point, pulling out a straight set victory, 7-5, 7-5.
The Stars trailed 2-1 after doubles, with Dominican's number one doubles duo of
Jillian Metcalf (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and
Marbeya Berner (New Lenox, Ill.) scoring the team's lone doubles' point with an 8-6 win. The victory improves Metcalf and Berner to 5-7 on the year in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
Dominican quickly pulled ahead as freshmen
Mady Corrie (Frankfort, Ind.) and
Morganne Schmidt (West Dundee, Ill.) made quick work of their opponents at numbers five and six singles respectively. Corrie rolled through Melanie Findlay, 6-4, 6-3, while Schmidt faced little resistance from Jordan Withey, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Aurora answered with points at the second and third singles flights to pull back in front. Berner than rallied from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win the number one singles battle with victories in the second and third set 7-5, 6-0. Villalobos then secured the victory, moving to 10-2 on the year in singles action.
With the win, the Stars secured their spot in the NACC Tournament, moving to 6-2 in the conference and 6-6 overall. The Stars, currently in fourth place, have two conference remaining, including a match with the front-running Edgewood College Eagles on Saturday in Forest Park.
