The Dominican University women's soccer team outshot the visiting Marian University Sabres 29-6 in a 3-1 win in River Forest on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Despite the unbalanced box score that tipped in the Stars' favor, the score was tied 1-1 at the half after goals by the Stars'
Kelli Iovino (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and the Sabres' Laura Maly. Iovino's team-leading seventh goal of the season came in the 27
th minute when she got on the end of
Taylor Adler's (Shorewood, Ill.)Â cross into the six-yard box, beating the Sabres' Alysha Kallas with a low shot.
Â
With the score tied into the 62
nd minute, Dominican's
Kelly Gerwitz (Florissant, Mo.) scored the eventual game-winner after drawing a penalty when she was taken down in the box. The goal was the third of the season for Gerwitz, her first game-winner.
Â
Dominican tacked on an insurance goal in the 64th minute when
Sara Stepanovich's (Des Plaines, Ill.)Â line drive drop-kick skipped over a Sabres' defender and was flicked forward by
Nathalie Mathis (Wauconda, Ill.), springing
Leah Tednes (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) for a breakaway. With the goalkeeper off her line, Tednes fired a shot into the back of the goal for her fourth goal of the season.
Â
Stepanovich made three saves in the winning effort, logging the full 90 minutes in goal for Dominican to lower her goals against average to 1.25.
Â
The Stars move to 5-4-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play. Dominican hits the road on Tuesday, traveling to Aurora to take on the Aurora University Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
