The Dominican University women's tennis team knocked off their Division Street rivals on Friday evening, topping the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, 5-3 at Concordia Chicago. With the win, the Stars, who are back in action Saturday against the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) front-running Edgewood College Eagles, move to 7-6 on the season and 7-2 in conference play.
The Stars took a 2-1 lead after doubles action, taking flights two and three led by an 8-3 win by
Carmelita Villalobos (Addison, Ill.) and
Morganne Schmidt (West Dundee, Ill.) at number three doubles. The freshmen combo is now 9-3 on the year as a doubles unit.
In singles action, the Stars closed out the win behind singles victories by
Jillian Metcalf (Oak Lawn, Ill.), Villalobos and Schmidt at three, four and six singles respectively. Villalobos, now 11-2 on the season, was pushed to three sets, dropping the first set 4-6 before rallying 6-2, 6-0 in the second and third sets.
Heading into the final conference match of the regular season, Dominican stands in third place in the NACC standings but can finish anywhere in the top five.
