Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Combacks Fall Short In Loss To Open New Year

The Dominican University men's basketball team all but erased a ten-point halftime deficit and later a 12-point second half deficit but both runs came up short in a 67-63 loss to the visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Saturday evening in the Igini Sports Forum.

For the Stars, Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) scored a game-high 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field in the losing effort while Quinn Pokora (Mundelein, Ill.) added 15 and Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) dropped in 11.

Trailing 33-23 at the half, Dominican opened the second half on a 9-0 run over the first 3:31 of the half to narrow the gap all the way down to one, 33-32.

The Warriors leading scorer on the season, Jake Jarnigo, then got going knocking down three three-pointers as part of an 18-7 run for Wisconsin Lutheran that built their lead back up to 51-39 with just under ten minutes to play.

Dominican then scored seven straight to pull back within five, 51-46, with 7:45 remaining.

Dominican was able to pull within three a couple of times, including 59-57, when Pokora knocked down one of his three second half three-pointers with 2:43 to play, but the Stars could never get over the hump.

The Stars shot 41.5 percent from the field and turned the ball over just seven times, but were outrebounded 41-25, surrendering 17 offensive rebounds to the Warriors which led to 23 second-chance points.

Jarnigo, scoring 13 in the second half, paced the Warriors with 15 points in the winning effort.

Dominican, now 1-12 overall and 1-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), return to action on Wednesday, traveling up to Madison, Wis. ,to take on the Edgewood College Eagles.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Edgedome.
