The Dominican University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action, posting a 4-0 win over the visiting Marian University Sabres on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.
Â
Dominican tallied two goals in each half of what was a physical contest that saw 23 fouls and six cautions.
Â
"It wasn't a pretty game today," commented
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach, when asked about Saturday's match. "We struggled to take the quality from our training sessions we had this past week and implement that quality on the game field. It's something we need to be able to do to get better in the areas where we need to improve."
Â
Dominican got on the board early when Marian's Zach Nelson took down the Stars'
Frankie Saiz (Naperville, Ill.) in the penalty box in the sixth minute of play. Dominican's captain
Zack Venzon (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) buried the ensuing penalty kick past Marian's Ian Chacon for his first goal of the season.
Â
In the final minute of the first half, Dominican's
Nicholas Baird (Columbia, Mo.) made a run on a bouncing ball through the Marian six-yard box served by
Tomasz Ratajczyk (Chicago, Ill.) and knocked it in for his first collegiate goal, putting the Stars ahead 2-0 at the half.
Â
In the 61
st minute, freshman
Iven Hernandez (Antioch, Ill.) snapped a three-match scoreless streak when he received a beautiful pass chipped over the Marian backline by
Alex Rohder (Orland Park, Ill.) and volleyed a shot from 15 yards out inside the far post. The score was Hernandez's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Â
The Stars then added an insurance marker in the 74
th minute when
Fernando Telles (Carpentersville, Ill.) pushed a header past Chacon for an insurance marker.
Â
Dominican outshot the Sabres 18-6, limiting Marian to just one shot on goal while the Stars peppered the Marian goal with nine shots on frame.
Â
Dominican's
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) got the start in goal, making one save in 64 minutes of work before giving way to
Wesley Zank (Sun Prairie, Wis.). The pair combined for the Stars fifth shutout of the season and fourth consecutive clean sheet. In fact, in four NACC matches in 2015, Dominican has not surrendered a goal in 390 minutes.
Â
The Stars return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Rockford University for a match with the Regents. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
