The Dominican University women's volleyball team saw their 26-match Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling in five sets to the Edgewood College Eagles (25-16, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25, 16-14) in Madison, Wisconsin.
Â
The Eagles were the last team to knock off the Stars in NACC play, topping Dominican in five sets on October 5, 2013. That match was also played in Madison.
Â
"We started off way too slow to compete in those first two sets," said Dominican's second-year head coach
Jeanne Czipri following the loss. "We made too many errors to win. To their credit, Edgewood played us well and we struggled to make adjustments. On a positive note, it was great to see
Alex [Kisten] (Huntley, Ill.)Â get back in her groove offensively."
Â
Kisten finished with a team-high 20 kills, hitting .298 in the losing effort. It was the sophomore's highest kill total since she knocked down 22 kills in a win over UW-Oshkosh back on September 12.
Â
The Stars hit just .025 over the first two sets before hitting .206 and .275 in the third and fourth sets respectively. Dominican then held a 13-11 lead in the fifth set before the Eagles went on a three-point run and set up match-point at 14-13. The Stars staved off match-point for a moment on a kill by
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) but Edgewood then closed out the win with back-to-back kills by Elizabeth Evans and Emily Chaussee.
Â
Senior setter
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) posted a double-double in the loss, dishing out 46 assists and collecting 21 digs while
Rosalyn Wyse (Greenville, Mich.) and
Kendyl Todd (Crete, Ill.) tallied 12 and ten kills respectively.
Â
Dominican could not overcome the 46 errors, including 36 hitting errors, in the loss.
Â
The Stars did not have to sit long on the loss, rallying for a four-set win (25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23) over the UW-La Crosse Eagles later in the afternoon. Wyse and Zanoni led the Dominican attack with 17 kills apiece while Wilson doled out 47 assists and had a team-high 22 digs.
Â
Kisten followed her 20-kill performance from the loss to Edgewood with ten kills on 29 swings in the win over UW-La Crosse.
Â
Dominican now stands at 15-7 on the year and 3-1 in the NACC. The Stars are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to take on the Marian University Sabres in conference play.
