The Dominican University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at Benedictine University on Friday evening, falling to the #15 Elmhurst College Bluejays in three sets (27-25, 26-24, 25-21) before topping the IIT Scarlet Hawks in three sets (25-13, 25-13, 25-22). The Stars'
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.), the program's all-time leader in assists, picked up her 4,000
th career assist along the way.
"It was a big day for Christina to get her 4,000
th career assist in the IIT match," said
Jeanne Czipri, the Stars' head coach, following the matches. "Our middles played well against Elmhurst but ultimately we didn't do the things we needed to win a match against an opponent of that quality. Against IIT we played really well for two sets but then lost our focus a little in the third set. We will need come out and finish faster, stronger and play with more discipline Saturday against Whitewater and next week in the conference tournament."
Against the Bluejays, Dominican held late leads in both the first and second set before Elmhurst rallied to capture the momentum to carry into the third set. Dominican hit just .069 for the match, including a -.023 percentage in the third set.
Wilson dished out 26 assists while
Rosalyn Wyse (Greenville, Mich.), last week's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC)
Student-Athlete of the Week, continued her outstanding play, knocking down ten kills on 28 swings while committing just three errors.
Tessa Griparis (Belleair, Fla.) added seven kills on 13 attempts but the rest of the Dominican offense managed to hit just -.033.
Defensively, Wyse added a team-high 16 digs for her third double-double of the season while
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.), the Stars' libero, added 13 digs.
The Stars' offense rebounded in the win over IIT, posting a .363 hitting percentage behind Wilson who doled out 44 assists in the three sets. Sophomore
Alex Kisten (Huntley, Ill.) led the attack with nine kills on 16 attacks while Griparis and
Kendyl Todd (Crete, Ill.) added seven kills apiece.
Defensively,
Olivia Szuszkiewicz (Barrington, Ill.) tallied a team-high 12 digs.
The split pushes Dominican to 23-8 on the year with a match against the eighth-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks on Saturday to close out the 2015 regular season. Dominican will then prep for the NACC Tournament, slated to host a tournament semifinal match on Thursday, November 5.
