The Dominican University women's tennis team closed out the 2015 Fall season on Monday evening, topping their neighborhood rivals the Concordia University Chicago Cougars 5-4. Dominican rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles action, snapping a six-match losing streak and improving to 3-11 overall and 3-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
Dominican's number two doubles combo of
Morganne Schmidt (West Dundee, Ill.) and
Carmelita Villalobos (Addison, Ill.) rolled over the Cougars' Aurora Bostwick and Ellie Smith 8-2. It was just the second win of the season by Schmidt and Villalobos and the pair's first win in conference play.
Needing four points in singles play, the Stars' claimed points at the two, three, four and six singles flights behind
Megan Hickey (Plainfield, Ill.), Schmidt,
Gabriella Curran (Elmhurst, Ill.), and
Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) respectively. Hickey picked up her fifth singles victory of the season, topping Liz Steinhoff, 6-1, 6-2. Schmidt was equally as impressive, topping Bostwick 6-2, 6-1 while Curran disposed of Smith, 6-3, 6-2. Hausl picked up her first singles victory of the season, steamrolling Hannah Kaul in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
