The Dominican University men's basketball team played their first of two games in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Tuesday evening, falling to the host Colorado College Tigers 85-71 despite a career-high 17 points from freshman
Isaac Moore (Chicago, Ill.).
"You never know what to expect coming out of winter break," commented
Mark White, the Stars' head coach, after the loss, "but the guys came out focused and competed hard against a good Colorado College team. Unfortunately, we lost our composure down the stretch and the game got away from us. We did get some nice contributions from the bench tonight, particularly Isaac and
Domenic Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.)."
The Stars kept pace with the Tigers early, trailing by just one, 40-39, with 16:13 remaining before Colorado College used a 15-2 run over the next two and a half minutes to open a 55-41 lead they would never relinquish. The Stars were able to cut the lead all the way down to four but the Tigers closed out the game on a 19-10 run to keep Dominican at bay.
Moore shot 5-for-12 from the field, connecting on five three-point field goals in the losing effort.
Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) added 14 and
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) dropped in 13 for the Stars but Dominican was outrebounded 43-18 as the Tigers limited the Stars to just four offensive rebounds and two second-chance points.
For the Tigers, Andrew Maddock led the way, scoring a game-high 23 points off the bench. Maddock connected on eight of his nine attempts from the field and converted on seven of his ten attempts from the foul line. John Hatch added 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Eric Houska scored 12 points and dished out eight assits.
The Stars, now 1-7 on the season, return to the court tomorrow, taking on the Wartburg College Knights at 11:00 a.m. MT at Colorado College.
