Game Recap: Softball |

Stars Split, Topping OWU In Extras

The Dominican University softball team moved to 7-3 on the season, dropping a 6-2 game to the UW-Superior Yellowjackets before topping the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, 3-2 in extra innings.

The Stars close out their spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida, on Saturday, with a pair of Pioneers for opponents, taking on the UW-Platteville Pioneers and Alfred State Pioneers.

Game One:  UW-Superior 6, Dominican 2

Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) fell to 2-3 in the circle, surrendering four runs on six hits and two walks as Dominican fell behind 4-0 after three innings.

Dominican got on the board in the top of the fourth when Ali Woitovich (Downers Grove, Ill.) singled through the right side of the infield with two outs and runners on first and second to score Alyssa Domico (Naperville, Ill.).

Dominican pulled another run closer in the fifth as Kaitlyn Tripp (Imperial, Mo.) started off the frame with a pinch-hit single up the middle.  Lindsey Dudek (Posen, Ill.) followed with a single to left before the runners were sacrificed to second and third by Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.).  Tripp came across to score when Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) bounced out to short.

Superior answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth but the Stars escaped further damage when Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.) started a 4-3 double play to end the inning, stranding a runner at third.

Dominican only managed one baserunner in the sixth as Burns was hit-by-pitch for the second time in the game but the Stars could not manufacture any more runs.

Game Two:  Dominican 3, OWU 2 (8 Inn.)

In their second extra-inning affair of the road trip, the Stars plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to top the OWU Battling Bishops, 3-2.

With international tie-breaker rules in place, the Battling Bishops managed a run in the top of the eighth, scoring on an errant Dominican throw that caromed out of play, allowing the go ahead run to cross the plate.  However, Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.), who picked up the complete-game victory in the circle, minimized the deficit, getting the final two hitters of the inning, stranding runners at second and third.

In Dominican's half of the eighth, Vivian Juarez (Lake Zurich, Ill.) started the frame at second and came all the way around to score when Rea's sacrifice bunt was thrown into right field.  With Rea at first, Hausl executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, pushing the winning run into scoring position with one out.  After a flyout, Siena Gyure (Crown Point, Ind.) roped the game-winning hit into center, sending Rea home from second.

Behrens limited OWU to two runs, scattering ten hits and one walk over eight innings.  The freshman moves to 3-0 on the season and boasts a 2.07 earned run average in 20-plus innings of work.

Offensively, the Stars managed six hits, including a RBI single by Sarah Conway (Chicago, Ill.) and a triple by Burns who is batting .519 through ten games.
