Stars Take Two To End Spring Trip

The Dominican University softball team ended their annual spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida, on Saturday, picking up a pair of victories over UW-Platteville and Alfred State University.  Freshman Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.) tossed a complete-game to move to 4-0 in the circle while classmate Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.) went 4-for-6 on the day with a double and a home run, driving in four runs and scoring three.

The Stars return home to River Forest with a 9-3 mark, winning their last three and five of their last six on the trip.  Dominican will entertain the Mount Mary Blue Angels next Saturday, March 21, at the Ballpark in Rosemont.  First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Game One:  Dominican 6, UW-Platteville 2

Dominican got the scoring going when Alyssa Domico singled to left center with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third to score Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.) and Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.).

The Stars added a run in the fourth when Rea bunted for a single with the throw ending up in right field, allowing Emaly Burns (Chicago, Ill.) to score from second base.  In the fifth, Ali Woitovich (Downers Grove, Ill.) singled to left with two outs, plating Vivian Juarez (Lake Zurich, Ill.).

Dominican added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when Hausl singled to left to score Rea who had reached on an error.  Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.) followed with a double to left, pushing across Hausl.

In the seventh, the Pioneers capitalized on a pair of Dominican errors to score a pair of unearned runs, but Behrens escaped the frame when she got Katie Huss to fly out to Rea in centerfield.

Behrens tossed her second complete-game in as many outings, scattering three hits and two walks, giving up just two unearned runs in the win.  The freshman lefthander is now 4-0 in the circle with a 1.54 earned run average.

Rea went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and also reached on an error.  The sophomore scored two runs and tallied a stolen base, moving to 9-for-10 on the season in stolen base attempts.  Hausl added two hits as the Stars logged nine in the winning effort.

Game Two:  Dominican 17, Alfred 2

Dominican's offense exploded for a ten-run top of the third en route to a 17-2 win over the Alfred State Pioneers.  The Stars rapped out nine hits in the inning and 15 hits total in the five-inning victory.

Marissa Burns went 3-for-3 in the game, including a solo home run in the top of the second, the first of her collegiate career.  Kaitlyn Tripp (Imperial, Mo.), Hausl and Barajas added two hits apiece.

In the circle, Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) improved to 3-3 on the season, picking up the win with three innings of two-hit work.  Locher issued just one walk and punched out three hitters.
